Time To Get Serious – Working Mums Live 2012

After starting this blog on a whim one Sunday morning last summer I have seen both my passion for writing and my audience grow into something I could only have dreamed of that lazy weekend last August.  I have now reached a point where I am now getting offers of paid work in relation to my blog and writing and am considering making freelance blogging/writing more than a hobby; it is turning into my ‘job’.  I hadn’t planned to be a work at home mum, I was quite happy being a housewife and mother, but as this is now the way my life is taking me I thought ‘what the hell, I’ll go for it!’

With this in mind I was very excited to be invited along to attend Working Mums Live as one of their gust bloggers.  This free event, held at the Business Design Centre Islington, was aimed at empowering and advising mums on all things work related.  On arrival I was met by the lovely Annika Williams from Working Mums who showed me around the different zones of the venue.  I was  particularly impressed by the Advice and Support area.  It has a CV clinic offering guidance, employment law specialists such as Gelbergs Solicitors offering free advice, education centres like Hillcroft College showcasing their courses and childcare providers advising working mums on how to get the best from their childcare options.  This area offered really practical advice that could make the difference between a mothers return to work being a happy and successful one or not.  I think it was the real gem of the event.

I would highly recommend taking a look at www.workingmums.co.uk there are some great resources for working mums are those thinking of returning to work, plus many job opportunities listed, all from family friendly employers.

Jimmy’s Farm – Sausage and Beer Festival 2011

I don’t know about you other lovely wives and girlfriends out there, but I find there is nothing more frustrating than the lead up to my darling husband’s birthday and the eternal dilemma of what to get for a man who has everything he needs.  It wasn’t so bad in the early days; I only had to worry about what I was to get him.  Now I have to get him a treat from me, something from the children and answer the untold amount of enquires from other family members as to what they could buy for him as well.

When I saw Jimmy’s Farm www.jimmysfarm.com advertising a Sausage and Beer festival for the weekend of his birthday I knew fate had intervened and given me a great present for him.

I love Jimmy’s Farm, every time I visit I leave planning when I can go back next. It’s such a wonderful place to spend the day, leaves me wanting to put my house on the market and look for a small holding to buy within 15mins of being there.

The sausage and beer festival was great fun, lots of food to eat, musical entertainment, children’s activities and even sausage making demonstrations that I managed to get the hubby up on stage to help with as it was his birthday!  All of this for a £6 entrance price (£5 in advance) and free entry to the farm trail was really such a great offer.  There was also an OktoberFest style night on the Saturday that sounded like it was great fun – and something we will defiantly be booking tickets for next year.

The farm itself is open 7 days week. With its offerings of rare breed animals, nature trail, woodland walk, farm shop, butchery, field kitchen, Joules shop, butterfly house, gardens, garden shop and newly opened restaurant there is so much to see and do you really can spend the whole day at the farm without getting bored.

Alongside the main farm, there are plenty of special events planned at Jimmy’s this year.  A farmers market is held on the 1st Saturday of every month which is well worth a visit and also a monthly comedy night which I’m yet to try but is high up on my to-do-list.

September sees the return of the annual ‘Harvest at Jimmy’s’ Festival www.harvestatjimmys.com, which is now an established food and music festival that has sold out for the past two years. The line up looks great again this year and for £97.50 for a 3 day camping ticket it’s easy to see why its being billed at ‘the next big thing’ for the wonderful British festival calendar.
